"Suffering introduces you to yourself and reminds you that you are not the person you thought you were."

—Paul Tillich

Often when we go through tribulation, it becomes clear how afraid we are once we're forced out of our comfort zone. A beam is set upon the habits we've tucked away in the deepest part of our psyche. We might find that we don't save as much as we ought to, that we have stopped improving, stopped studying, become lazy, challenges may show us that we have come to rely too much on our friends for support or that we don't show enough love to…

"It's such rubbish when they say great minds think alike... Sheep think alike!"

- my darling wife whilst reading some mawkish article.

This is probably one of the best quotes I've presented in year! We want to do something different with our lives, we say we want to have a dent on the universe, we say we want to quite nine to five... we say many things! And yet we think like everyone else.

"Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom."

- Francis Bacon

There are different types of silence. There's being still. Fostering the spirit by quietening the mind. It's why a tribe of baldy's sit cross-legged for hours to attain enlightenment. There's something to be said for meditation but I've never been any good at it in the classic sense. But there's the type of clarity I move towards when I write my thoughts down or read the Bible or walk through certain crowded streets of London (funnily enough).

There's another type of silence, and that's listening to people. Staying quiet enough to hear what they…

The Startup ABC Series – B is for Branding.

Yesterday, I went to a meetup  organised by Kate Hodsdon who  invited Mark Wing to speak about Branding.
Branding is one of those things we "know all about" but few know how to build or manage. One of the key pieces of Wisdom he shared was:

Ask yourself what you want to be famous for....

... then ask a stranger to tell you what they think of your startup tomorrow: if they aren't clear or say it sounds like something else they know, then you've lost them and should probably go back to the drawing board.

The next Startup ABC…

"Anticipate the difficult by managing the easy."

- Lao Tzu

Anticipation is a skill that I've worked on in the last year or so. You know your taxes are going to be paid, why don't you start adding up your receipts? Why don't you put some money aside? You know you have to send your child to school, a good one at that, perhaps it's time to start saving for that too.

What if you're out of work tomorrow? How will you and your family survive? There's a fine line between worry and anticipation. Anticipation is often positive, understanding that there are seasons;…

"Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power."

- Lao Tzu

Doesn't this sound like something one of the greatest millitary strategists of all time, Sun Tzu would say? Actually, Sun Tzu, the Chinese general that lived from 544 to 496 BC, did in fact say:

"If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles."

It's so important that the one grey strand of hair in the midst of my bushy beard quivers when I think of how far reaching this truth is. I pity the fool, that hasn't thought about this at some point in their…
